Cultural Learning Communities

Cultural Learning CommunitiesCOCC's Cultural Learning Communities are designed to provide entering students with a solid academic foundation that helps them achieve their educational goals.  Learning Community participants benefit from the integrated instruction between their courses and the sense of community that develops between peers.  Research has shown that Cultural Learning Communities can help students achieve higher academic success because of the collaborative approach of their instructors and the cultural focus of their classes.

COCC has two Cultural Learning Communities:  Líderes del Futuro: The Latino Cultural Learning Community and Raven Writers:  The Native American Cultural Learning Community.  These Learning Communities are open to all students, and assignments and learning activities will be designed to provide a specific emphasis on Latino or Native American cultures.

The Cultural Learning Communities combine the following components:

1)  A transitional writing course sequence (Writing 60 in fall and Writing 65 in winter) through which students are able to progress from pre-college level writing in the first two terms and be prepared for the college-level English composition class in spring term.  These writing courses will incorporate Mexican American/Latino or Native American authors and culture into course assignments and discussions.

2)  A College Success course is paired with Writing 60 in fall term.  This class provides students with in-depth, academic guidance and skills for long-term college success.  The activities and assignments of this course will be linked to the assignments and instruction of the writing course in each learning community.

3)  In winter term, a Career Exploration class is linked with the Writing 65 course in the Latino Cultural Learning Community.  This class will help students to examine their personal and academic goals in conjunction with their career interests and development.  Again, the course activities and assignments will be linked to the academic assignments of the writing course.

4)  In winter term, the Fundamentals of Public Speaking class is linked with the Writing 65 course in the Native American Cultural Learning Community.  Again, the course activities and assignments will be linked to the academic assignments of the writing course.

All of these classes provide both a supportive and stimulating environment for students, as well as a rigorous college curriculum that integrates Mexican American/Latino or Native American literature with the writing exercises and college success skill-building activities.  Students develop a sense of interdependence as they work collaboratively together and build a strong, supportive community.

In many cases, the writing instructors will serve as the students’ initial academic advisors.  This approach provides students with individual, culturally sensitive, academic and career advising designed to help them progress successfully through their college career.
